Minimize Tweeter Spam: a classic tip

By Denis Kristanda

We know Tweeter is a great success in social networking world. More and more people embrace it existence to enhance their networking and online business.

But as ants will come when there is sugar, these spammers of Tweeter is now everywhere. At several occasions, I could have several "Andy Jenkins", a few "Brad Fallon" and multiple "Jason Potash" (for you that unfamiliar, these names are some of the gurus in internet marketing world) on my follower list.

Modus Operandi / How the spammer spams
1. They follow you although you haven't really do anything. (My company account - not yet active - already have 5 followers!!)
2. Typically they use fake name, say: Andy__Jenkins (with 2 underscore) or similar like that.
3. They use user curiosity to trick you. If you're new and someone follow you without apparent reason, you're curious , check them out, and as they hope: follow them back. if this happened then you are the victim of tweeter spammer.

How to Minimize Spam
1. Never follow a person if you don't know them (the same as you never reply a spam email since you only confirm that your email does a valid one)
2. Report to twitter directly via a tweet "@spam [suspicious username]". Twitter is pursuing this spam or impersonation seriously because this is part of their reputation
3. You might want to just block the person that sending direct message spam

Other risk
Recently twitter account of Ed Dale (another IM guru) is broken into. Apparently this is due to brute force attack (keep guessing the password until it founds the correct one). So, if tweeter become more important part of your online business, treat the account's password just like your banking password. Select solid strong password to protect your account.

If you wish: follow me in twitter
